DWS assignment 3

Ireland’s road to the Euros

It has been a long and far from boring journey for the Boys in Green as they fought for their ticket to France. Ireland did not start their Euro 2016 campaign with high hopes. The Republic of Ireland was drawn in a group with world champions Germany and rivals Scotland, and with a team that played far from inspiring. After a strong start, 8 points from 4 matches, the Boys in Green got into a difficult couple of months: two draws following a defeat against Scotland. Irish supporters were looking to spend another summer on the couch. O’Neil, manager of the Republic of Ireland, needed to think of something new. Even after a 4-0 win against Gibraltar, fans still did not get their hopes up. That all changed when the German team came to Dublin. On October 8, 2015 something happened no one ever thought would have been possible: Ireland defeated world champions Germany with a 1-0 win. A thrilling couple of weeks followed to the play offs which would give them a ticket to France. It was not until the very last game, on November 15 2015 against Bosnia & Herzegovina, Ireland managed to secure their place in the group stage in France. Umbro proudly presents the shirt the Boys in Green will be wearing at the European Championships in France.

Reflection

In my blog I want to show the experience of what fans go through when they see their team play. It shows how important a silly game can be for an entire nation.
The technique I used in my social media post was AIDA.

DWS Passion and Themes

Umbro’s passion is to combine its heritage in football culture with innovative, modern football to create “ground-breaking and iconic” attire. Umbro’s products are inspired to make the perfect blend between performance and style: Harold Humphrey’s, founder of Umbro, vision in 1924 was to bring a tailoring touch to sportswear serving all the practical needs of a modern, competitive athlete. Humphrey’s vision is still trying to be realised today.

Themes
Tradition is extremely important in Umbro’s identity. Umbro has been around for more than 90 years and played an important role in British football ever since. By giving products a touch of tradition, Umbro wants to show what football is all about. In modern football it sends a message: money can not buy you the real experience. Influencers in this theme are the football clubs: most of the kits have a historical, but classy look.

Future is a new step Umbro wants to take. With the slogan “LIGHT UP THE FUTURE” they show that they are not just a brand of the past, but also the spark that will actually light up the future. The goal of this theme is to innovate the products used in football. Umbro has sponsored several world class footballers who post messages on social media when they use a new product.

Fan-base is the biggest group Umbro sells their product to. They often advertise to this group by playing into the traditions of the teams. Using colours the club wore during a title winning season, or a design they wore in their very first season in the highest tier. Umbro interacts with the fans by organising competitions people form all ages can participate in and win something that will connect them to the brand for a lifetime.

World Cups are the times Umbro stands out the most. The company has a focus on sponsoring national teams. This improves the brand in two ways. First, there will not be any rivalry against Umbro, because they sponsor the best men of that country. If anything it will connect the fans. Secondly, the games the national teams play at the World Cups are broadcasted all over the world. Meaning people all over the world will see the Umbro kits.
